A NEW GENERATION OF LEADERSHIP

Home: Welcome

ABOUT ME

My name is Lindsey Thiel and I am your County Commissioner.

As a lifelong Kent County resident, I attended St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic School and Grand Rapids Catholic Central High School. After graduating from Michigan State University, I couldn’t imagine living anywhere but Kent County, so I returned and bought my first home in Grand Rapids Township in 2009, marrying my husband Joe a few years later. We are now raising our daughters 3 miles from where I grew up. I am happy that we have this very special community in which to raise our girls.

While still attending MSU, I began my career in Lansing as an intern for Senator Bill Hardiman. After graduation, I turned my internship into a full time position as his Communications Director. After his term ended, I began as a Legislative Assistant to State Representative Ken Yonker. Finally, I completed a decade at the State Capitol working for State Representative Rob VerHeulen as his Legislative Aide.

During my time in Lansing, I worked on numerous issues vitally important to Kent County; including revenue sharing, public notice requirements, indigent defense, and the bill to create the Gerald R. Ford International Airport Authority. I worked on appropriations with Rep. VerHeulen, who chaired the MDOT, Judiciary, DHHS, and General Government Subcommittees, and was the Vice Chair of the Appropriations Committee.

After Rep. VerHeulen ended his final term, I decided it was time to work closer to home and my two young girls. In addition to my duties as a Kent County Commissioner, I am currently the Planning Assistant at Grand Rapids Township. My involvement in the community also encompasses having served on the Grand Rapids Township Zoning Board of Appeals, the St. Thomas the Apostle School Board, and being an active member of St. Robert of Newminster with my family in Ada.

I look forward to working with you to keep Kent County on a successful path. I love this community and wish to continue to represent you and move the county forward. My number one goal is to make Kent County the best place to live, work and raise a family.

Please reach out to me with any question or concerns. I hope to earn your support!

ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT

Support for our Small Business Community

Small businesses are the foundation of a successful local economy. That is why I have voted to

reduce burdensome regulations and cut fees.

I will support sound economic development policies that encourage growth of our small business community and bring the opportunity for a diverse and sustainable workforce for Kent County.

SAFE COMMUNITIES

For a Better Future

As your County Commissioner I will always support the brave men and women who are public safety officers.

While others will talk about defunding our police departments, I will continue to prioritize the safety of our community by voting to fully fund the Kent County Sheriff's Department.

FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY

Good Steward of Taxpayer Dollars

I will only support a budget that  is balanced, structured, and effective.

Through smart, efficient policies, Kent County is able to keep our taxes low without sacrificing vital services provided to our seniors, veterans, and children.

Prioritizing fiscal responsibility will better equip our county to respond to emerging issues and will maintain our AAA bond rating, saving YOU millions of dollars.
